On October, the Election Commission of India announced the dates for the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly Elections. Jharkhand saw its first phase of polling on November 13 and the second phase is on November 20. The counting will be held on November 23.
Jharkhand's assembly saw two chief ministers this time, owing to ED arresting JMM supremo Hemant Soren. This led to the CM's post being vacated and Champai Soren being chosen as the party's legislative body leader.
However, soon after Hemant was released from prison, he took over the reins of the state government, much to the chagrin of Champai. This made Champai quit the party a few days later and he ended up joining the BJP. This time, Champai Soren has been fielded as a saffron party candidate from the Saraikela constituency.
Here we take a look at Jharkhand MLAs who won their respective seats with the highest margin in the 2020 polls:
Alamgir Alam of the Congress won the Jharkhand elections with the highest margin: 65,108. Veni Prasad Gupta of the BJP came second. While Alam fetched 1,28,218 votes, Gupta managed to add only 63,110 to his kitty.
Samir Kr. Mohanty of the JMM won the Baharagora constituency with a margin of 60,565 votes, defeating Kunal Shadangi of the BJP, who fetched 45,452 votes.
Manish Jaiswal of the BJP won the Hazaribagh seat in the previous assembly elections with a margin of 51,812 votes. While he fetched 106,208 votes, his closest opponent, Dr Ramchandra Prasad of the Congress got 54,396 votes.
Niral Purty of the JMM won with a margin of 67,750 votes in 2020, his nearest opponent being Bhupendra Pingua of the BJP.
While Pingua fetched 20,558 votes, Purty won with a comfortable margin of 47,192.
Sanjib Sardar won the Potka (ST) constituency with a margin of 43,110 votes. While Sanjib managed to get 110,753 votes, Menka Sardar of the BJP gave him the closest fight with 67,643 votes.
Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
