Shiv Sena (UBT) leader firing case: Cops detain a person, probe under way

India has honoured 53 people with Bharat Ratna

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday announced that former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Charan Singh as well as Green Revolution pioneer M S Swaminathan will be conferred the Bharat Ratna.  

The fresh set of names comes days after former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoor Thakur and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani were chosen for the highest civilian award.

With this, India has honoured 53 people with Bharat Ratna.

During the past ten years when the BJP was in power, ten people were chosen for Bharat Ratna, which includes AB Vajpayee, Sangh icons Madan Mohan Malaviya and Nanaji Deshmukh besides former President Pranab Mukherjee and music maestro Bhupen Hazarika.

Economic reform, criminal charges, unbroken 5-year term: The patchy legacy of Narasimha Rao

Polyglot, statesman and scholar, the inscrutable P V Narasimha Rao was often referred to as the Chanakya of Indian politics, the prime minister known for initiating far-reaching economic reforms and also for his skilful political manoeuvring.

Rao, who will be conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, more than 19 years after his death, was prime minister from 1991-1996. He was the first prime minister from the south, the first Congress leader from outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to complete a full five-year term and the man who steered India through the turbulent early 1990s.

His five-year rule saw the Babri Masjid demolition, the rise of the saffron forces and also the country being placed firmly on a new economic path, away from the Nehru years of public sector socialism.
