Central forces to remain in Andhra to prevent post-poll violence

In a bid to prevent post-poll violence, the Election Commission (EC) has for the first time decided to continue with the deployment of central forces in some states even after the expiry of the Model Code of Conduct period, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said on Monday.

The states where the central forces would continue to be deployed include Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur. (PTI)

What to expect as we inch closer to the much-awaited results of Andhra Pradesh Assembly polls?

The fight for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly is going to be a three-horse race. Firstly, there is the incumbent YSRCP government, with Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy at the helm. The fierce challengers are the NDA, comprising of the BJP, the Telegu Desam Party (TDP), led by former CM N Chandrababu Naidu, and the Jana Sena Party (JSP), led by actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan. The final player in the mix is the I.N.D.I.A. bloc, with Congress at the forefront.

The YSRCP came into power after winning the 2019 Andhra Assembly polls by a huge margin, amassing as many as 155 out of the 175 assembly seats. While the TDP could manage to secure only 23 seats, both the BJP and the Congress failed to open their account.

This time, however, the story might be entirely different. Most exit polls have tipped the NDA government to come back to power, especially bolstered by a resurgence of the TDP. But as we all know, exit polls have often gone off the mark in the past in this country. The YSRCP will certainly be hoping for something similar.
