Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday took a swipe at Congress leaders, who allegedly tried to mislead employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited a few years ago when the Indian Army was deployed on the border, and said they are not even talking about the public sector company now.

He also claimed that the defence sector was like "a club for the Congress which their close relatives could plunder". (PTI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flayed the Congress for allegedly "hindering" the future of children by proposing to scrap the National Education Policy (NEP), which enables a child to pursue his or her studies in one's mother tongue.

Addressing an election rally here, the Prime Minister said NEP has been formulated to ensure that the lack of knowledge of English should not stop an economically weaker child from rural areas from becoming a doctor or an engineer. (PTI)

Amit Shah cancels campaign in Karnataka amid Manipur violence

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has cancelled his election tour in Karnataka following the incident of violence between the tribals and majority Meitei community in Manipur. Shah was scheduled to take part in a roadshow in Karatagi of Koppal district on Friday. He also cancelled the public meeting in Kustagi and roadshow in Koppal.

Congress slams Shah over 'BJP stands for promotion of all languages' remark

The Congress on Friday hit out at Home Minister Amit Shah's reported remarks that the BJP stands for promotion of all languages, alleging that the Modi government had spent Rs 640 crore to promote Sanskrit while just Rs 3 crore on promotion of Kannada.

Shah, in an interview to The Hindu, said the BJP stands for the promotion of all Indian languages and the accusation that it promotes Hindi at the cost of regional languages is “politically motivated”.

Reacting to the remarks, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet, "The HM has claimed in an interview that the BJP stands for 'promotion' of all languages…Is that why the Modi Govt has spent Rs 640 cr to promote Sanskrit and JUST Rs 3 cr to support promotion of Kannada, one of the six classical languages of the country?"

Congress lodges complaint with EC against PM for invoking name of Hanuman in election rallies

Congress on Thursday lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for invoking the name of Lord Hanuman in the election rallies in Karnataka.

Modi in his election rally since May 2 has been hitting out at the Congress for promising a ban on the right-wing outfit Bajrang Dal and equated the ban with "locking up" Bajrangbali, Lord Hanuman.

Modi also chanted ‘Jai Bajrangbali’ in all the three speeches in Karnataka on Wednesday. (PTI)

Calling upon people in Karnataka to vote for any other party but the BJP in the assembly polls, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday said she would be happy if the saffron camp’s “downfall” starts with the southern state ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Nationalism, development on forefront, Hindutva takes backseat in coastal districts in Karnataka

In Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, although the BJP had won 12 out of 13 seats in the 2018 Assembly elections with the help of an aggressive Hindutva campaign, this no longer seems to be an election issue.

Many issues and controversies rocked the region in the last two years - the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru, banning Hijab from educational institutes, the sale of halal meat, love jihad and ban on shops run by Muslims during temple fairs. However, they no longer seem to be central election issues. Now, the focus appears to have shifted to development, nationalism and then, Hindutva.
