'Courts should dispose of pending cases'

There should be more concern in disposing of pending cases in courts, MLC and State Bar Council S L Bhojegowda.

Reacting to the High Court’s direction in removing illegal hoardings and filling up potholes in Bengaluru, the MLC welcomed the HC’s directions and said that the same concern should be shown in tackling the problem of pending cases in their courts.

Addressing reporters, he clarified: “I don’t mean to mount pressure on courts.”

Petitions filed by senior citizens should be disposed of quickly. Lack of infrastructure or vacant posts of judges were not reasons for huge pendency of cases, he added.

As against the past, the infrastructure is far better these days. The Advocates Associations’ have urged Chief Justice of India to fill up vacant posts in the High Court and lower courts.

Without referring to MLC Ivan D’Souzam, Gowda sought to know why autorickshaw stand that came up had a board stating that the facility was constructed using local area development funds of an MLC.

“The government funds were used for the construction, not MLA’s. I will file a public interest litigation (PIL) in High court if I don’t get satisfactory responses from protocol division,” he said.

Gowda criticised education department for its unscientific categorisation of schools across the state. A school at Brahmavar and a school in Mangaluru are categorised under A category, the legislator charged.

He promised to raise issues like transfer policy for teachers, unscientific student-teacher ratio, among others in the coming legislative council sessions.

Former minister K Amarnath Shetty and District JD(S) President Mohammed Kunhi were also present at the press meet.
