DMK has done nothing to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests, Katchatheevu unmasked its double standards: PM Modi

Hitting out at DMK and Congress, Modi wrote on 'X' and said that both the parties are family units and care only about the rise of their sons and daughters.

He said the the details of Katchatheevu show DMK's 'double standards' and that the party has done nothing to safeguard Tamil Nadu's interest.

"Rhetoric aside, DMK has done NOTHING to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests. New details emerging on #Katchatheevu have UNMASKED the DMK’s double standards totally. Congress and DMK are family units. They only care that their own sons and daughters rise. They don’t care for anyone else. Their callousness on Katchatheevu has harmed the interests of our poor fishermen and fisherwomen in particular", he wrote on 'X'.

'Congress, DMK approached Katchatheevu issue as though they bear no responsibility', says EAM S Jaishankar

On the brewing Katchatheevu issue, EAM S Jaishankar said that the issue 'didn't surface suddenly but is a live one and often debated in the parliament'.

"Congress, DMK approached Katchatheevu issue as though they bear no responsibility. Katchatheevu issue a matter of frequent correspondence between Centre, Tamil Nadu; I replied to CM 21 times. We know who did this, what we don't know is who hid it...We believe that the public has the right to know how did this situation come up", he said.

Katchatheevu Island: What has stirred the controversy again?

BJP's Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai obtained some documents that seemed to indicated that Congress never gave much importance to the Katchatheevu Island and hence 'gave away' the tiny Island to Sri Lanka. The details drew criticisms from the saffron party including the PM who said the issue brought out DMK's 'double standards'.

However, the issue is not new, it has been amongst the much debated topics in Tamil Nadu politics.

As part of her ‘Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime agreement’, Indira Gandhi ‘ceded’ Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka in 1974 and at the time, protests against Indira Gandhi’s move, citing the historical control of the Ramnad zamindari over the island and traditional fishing rights of Indian Tamil fishermen, Indian Express reported.

As the Lok Sabha come closer, the controversy has been brought up again on the day the I.N.D.I.A. bloc organised a maharally, as citizens, we can now only wait and watch how the national politics unravels further and how many issues will see a rebirth from history.

Nehru saw Katchatheevu island as 'nuisance': Jaishankar

Speaking about the ongoing issue on Katchatheevu island, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said that the island did not matter to the then PM, Jawahar Lal Nehru.

"We should get the fishing right. The island was given away in 1974 and fishing rights were given away in 1976. The most basic reason was indifference shown by Central government and PMs of the day. In May of 1961, PM Nehru wrote that he attaches no importance at all to this little island and he would have no hesitation in giving up claim to it. He wrote that he doesn't like matter like this being pending indefinitely and being raised again and again in Parliament. He saw it as a nuisance", he said.
